Loft Insulation: Installation Process

If you’ve arranged to have Loft Insulation installed in your home then the following process will be carried out by our Insulation Installers when they arrive at your home:

What you should do

You will need to clear your loft prior to our visit of any unwanted items or stored objects before the insulation is installed. (Our Assessor will have advised you what’s required during your Home Survey)

Explaining the process

Upon arrival, our Insulation Installers will fully explain how they will conduct your Loft Insulation installation.

Care of your Home

Before we start, it’s important to us that you should experience the minimum fuss possible. Dust sheets will be laid through your home on the route our Installers will use to gain access to your loft.
Additionally, we take great care to ensure that all material is carefully transported from our vehicle to the work area in the loft.

Re-Inspecting your Loft

It is important we re-inspect your home to confirm it is suitable for Loft Insulation. The Installers will re-check our Assessors measure to ensure nothing has changed since our initial Assessment of your property.

Our Insulation Installers will check your loft for any high powered cables (e.g. electric showers) as these must be left uncovered

Your loft will also be checked to ensure it has adequate ventilation, additional will be created if required.

Tanks & Pipes

During your Home Survey, our Assessor would have taken measurements of any tanks or water carrying pipes. These will be insulated by us to meet BS5803: Part 5 1985.

Walkways

A walk way will be fitted (where required) to provide access to any tanks or boilers in the loft.

Down-Lighters

If your home is fitted with down-lighters on the loft floor our installers will fit non combustible and non conductive down-light covers. These are rigid enough to support the loft insulation enabling our insulation to be laid directly over the down-lighters thus maintaining a sufficient air space to avoid overheating.

Laying the Insulation

Depending on the depth of your existing insulation we may be installing one or two layers of insulation to bring your loft up to an installed minimum depth of either 250mm or 270mm.

This is usually laid as 100mm between the joists and 150mm laid over the joists. If you have existing insulation between the joists of a suitable thickness we will top up your loft with a second layer over the joists.

Cleaning up

Our installers will ensure all areas are cleaned to your satisfaction before leaving your property.

Any excess material and waste packaging will be removed from your loft

When possible the loft hatch will be insulated and draft proofed.

Loft Certificate

A loft certificate confirming the loft area and thickness of insulation installed will be fixed in the loft along with danger signs to warn the joists are no longer visible.

Your Final Inspection

Before leaving, we will confirm the work we have undertaken. We will ask you to sign our paperwork to ensure you are happy with the work that has been carried out.

Technical Inspection

After a few weeks we may select your property for random inspection by one of our Inspectors. This is done at your convenience and is part of our commitment to the quality of our work.
